Zimmer’s Golden Globe-nominated score uses traditional Japanese taiko drums for action sequences, and more pastoral poems using shakuhachi flutes and kotos to match the film’s story of East meets West in the late 19th century.
the last samurai Centers on Civil War veteran Nathan Algren (Cruise), caught between the newly formed Imperial Japanese Army and a rebellion led by the “Last Samurai” of the same name, Moratsugu Katsumoto struggle. The latter role is played by Academy Award nominee Ken Watanabe.
In December, Zimmer named his interstellar Scoring the best work of his career — but his best is yet to come. Most recently, he shared a live double album recorded during his European tour in 2022.
