OpenAI CEO to testify before Congress for the first time next week

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will testify before Congress for the first time next week, as lawmakers urgently seek to figure out how to regulate the rapidly developing artificial intelligence tools.

Altman, whose company created the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT, will speak Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee at 10 a.m. ET on privacy, technology and Testify on legal issues. and senior member Josh Hawley, R-Mo.

The hearing, titled “Oversight of AI: Rules for AI,” will also include IBM Christina Montgomery, vice president and chief privacy and trust officer, and Gary Marcus, professor emeritus at NYU.

The meeting will take place the day after Altman dined with lawmakers from both parties after Monday’s vote, according to a copy of the invitation obtained by NBC News. Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., who co-hosted the dinner, told NBC News it was meant to “educate lawmakers,” and more than 50 lawmakers have responded.

Last week, Altman joined other tech CEOs at a meet at the white house Discuss the risks associated with artificial intelligence with Vice President Kamala Harris.
