On the eve of the live-action release little mermaid, result Will look back at the Disney Renaissance and how it shaped our culture. Today, we start by ranking all the live-action adaptations of Disney classics.

The problem with every remake is: Why? Why take a movie that already exists and retell the same story again? The reason is almost always an important aspect of whether a remake is actually worth watching, because when the answer is rooted in creative choices, it can be (at least) an engaging viewing experience. But when the reason is more business-minded, well…

Let’s face it: Many of Disney’s live-action animated remakes have failed to live up to their inspirations, with little to no creative additions — even though live-action remakes are often extended by a half hour or more than their predecessors. seriously, every live action remake longer than the film it was based on or inspired by, except one. twenty one. Pinocchio (2022)

Disney reality show ranking

Pinocchio (Disney+)

Robert Zemekis’ fall into the uncanny valley has been one of the most disappointing developments in 21st century cinema. He’s an excellent filmmaker when he’s not obsessing over his motion-capture toys, which unfortunately hasn’t happened in a while. There are some fun additions to the classic tale of puppets who want to be real boys, like the character of disabled puppeteer Fabiana (Kyanne Lamaya), but it’s still hard to look straight into Pinocchio’s blank animated eyes without feeling horrified. Even a few Guillermo del Toro’s Academy Award-winning adaptation, which came out a month later, wasn’t quite as good, and it’s still a disturbingly bad movie. — LS Miller

20. Alice through the mirror (2016)

Alice Through the Looking Glass Anne Hathaway

Alice Through the Looking-Glass (Disney)

candy colored mild Alice through the mirror Somehow the sweetness was forgotten; it was like a candy binge that skipped the sugar urge and went straight to the stomach ache. The action scenes never have any stakes, and the star-studded cast ranges from the underused at best (Helena Bonham Carter) to those who sleepwalk straight to the bank (Johnny Depp). As for Alice herself, Mia Wasikowska plays a dazzling teenage gymnast in the HBO drama treatment, But while she stands out in an intimate therapist’s room, Disney’s overwrought wonderland swallows her whole. Lewis Carroll’s best adaptations evoke stories of kids dreaming on LSD, but the story has never been more inspiring than a room full of suits dreaming of money. — wren grave
