G7 Summit: A gathering of world leaders opens today in Hiroshima. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the summit would seek to affirm the rule of law in the international order. Leaders from Australia, South Korea and India are also heading to the city, in addition to leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Inflation in Japan: CPI inflation data for April will be released today. National core CPI is expected to rise to 3.4% from 3.1% in March.

market: Japanese futures were higher, but Hong Kong futures were lower. Stocks on Wall Street rose on Thursday after policymakers in Washington said a bill to raise the U.S. debt ceiling could be voted on next week. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite hit their highest levels since August 2022, rising 0.9% and 1.5%, respectively.
