LONDON – Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral cost the British government about 162 million pounds ($201.4 million), the Treasury said on Thursday.

Britain’s longest-reigning monarch died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96.

A 10-day period of national mourning followed a 10-day period of national mourning ahead of the funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 18, during which most businesses and workplaces remained open but many events were cancelled.

An estimated 250,000 members of the public saw the Queen recline during London’s mourning period, with many lining the streets of London for more than 24 hours.

She was buried at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, Berkshire.

According to the latest published figures, the cost of UK government departments includes £73.68 million for the Home Office, £57.42 million for the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport, £2.565 million for the Transport Department and £2.096 million for the Transport Ministry. The Foreign Office, and the Ministry of Defence, £2.89 million.

It cost the Scottish government £18.756 million, where a slow hearse procession and a one-day state funeral took place. Britain’s Central Treasury said the money had been returned.

The queen’s successor and son, King Charles III, was anointed and crowned on May 6 in a three-day coronation weekend expected to cost £50m-£100m.
