In the trailer, young Celie (Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) is separated from her sister Nettie (Halle Bailey) after marrying an older man known only as Mister (Colman Domingo). Over time, Celie finds strength in the sisterhood of women she meets, such as jazz singer Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson), Squeak (HER) and Sofia (Danielle Brooks).

Directed by Blitz Bazawule from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley, Purple Corey Hawkins is Harpo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is Mom and Ciara is Nettie. Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Deon Cole, Tamala J. Mann, Stephen Hill, Jon Batiste and Elizabeth Marvel also appear.

Adapted from Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name, Purple It was first adapted into a film three years later. It is produced and directed by Spielberg and stars Whoopi Goldberg, Winfrey, Danny Glover and Laurence Fishburne. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Goldberg and Best Supporting Actress for Winfrey and Margaret Avery. However, it didn’t take home any awards.

In 2004, it was adapted into a Tony Award-nominated musical from playwright Martha Norman, with lyrics and music by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell and Ellie Willis. The original Broadway production was nominated for 11 Tony Awards.

Purple It will be released on December 25.
