Trey Lance Clears The Air On Recent Trade Rumors

The San Francisco 49ers have been in a problematic situation over the last few years when it comes to the quarterback position, with a few viable options but few healthy bodies to lead this team under center.

The 2022 NFL season was rough for the 49ers at quarterback, with Trey Lance going down early in the season, followed by veteran Jimmy Garoppolo suffering a season-ending injury at about the midway point.

This situation thrust little-known rookie Brock Purdy into the spotlight in San Francisco, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he defied the odds and became the quarterback they’ve needed, as he earned the job as the starter even if Lance or Garoppolo were able to return.

Unfortunately for Purdy, an injury in the NFC Championship Game may cost him some time in 2023, leaving the 49ers in a challenging situation again.

However, the team now has veteran quarterback Sam Darnold in the fold, which may make Lance expendable, as he’s been mentioned in persistent trade rumors, but he doesn’t want to go anywhere, as he made clear via 49ers on NBCS.

Lance’s future with the team will be determined by general manager John Lynch, who has been reluctant to trade him up to this point.

There’s still a chance the team could trade him between now and the start of the season, with Darnold now in San Francisco and Purdy expected to be the long-term starter for the 49ers.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction the team goes from here and whether Lance has a future in the Bay Area.
