How Dexcom and Abbott are moving beyond diabetes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes. That’s slightly more than 11 percent of the total population.

A person with diabetes’ body does not produce enough insulin or any insulin at all. People with this condition must monitor their blood sugar regularly. Traditionally, this is done with blood glucose meters, which diabetics prick their fingers over and over to collect drops of blood. But over the past decade, technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring have been on the rise.

Abbott and Dekang are the two most dominant players in the field. Both companies have seen growth.

The technology is also being marketed by a number of health and wellness apps, as many companies see benefits for those without diabetes.

CNBC spoke with Abbott and Dexcom about the technology inside CGM and how they see it expanding.
