Everyone is a programmer with generative AI: Nvidia CEO

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – 2023/05/29: Jensen Huang, President and CEO of Nvidia, speaks during the keynote of the Grace Hopper superchip at COMPUTEX. Freshly baked NvidiaWith its stellar earnings report and subsequent stock price rally, its CEO Jensen Huang predicted that the world was entering a “new era of computing.”

He said that anyone can become a programmer, as long as they talk to the computer, the desired function will appear.

Programmers will no longer need to write lines of code that display the dreaded “compilation failure” due to missing semicolons.

How will this be done? By generating artificial intelligence, Huang said during a keynote speech at the Computex Forum in Taiwan on Monday.

In his first public keynote since the pandemic, Huang introduced a new AI supercomputer platform called the DGX GH200, designed to build generative AI models.

Generative AI is an artificial intelligence technique that can generate various types of content, including text, images, audio, and synthetic data.

“The computer doesn’t care how you program it, it tries to understand what you mean because it has this incredibly large language model capability. So the programming barrier is very low,” Huang noted.

“We’ve closed the digital divide. Everyone is a programmer. Now, you just have to say something to the computer.”

Generative AI is “the most important computing platform of our generation,” according to Nvidia, as individuals and companies begin to create new applications and leverage generative AI in the process.

With each era of computing, you can do different things that were impossible before.

Creative professionals will be able to create images with simple text prompts, while programmers can speed up app development and debugging, the company said. Even architects can generate 3D models from 2D plans.

“With every era of computing, you can do different things that weren’t possible before,” Huang said, adding that “artificial intelligence certainly fits the bill.”

This era of computing is “special in several ways,” he explained.

Generative AI is capable of understanding information beyond text and numbers, the CEO said. It “can now understand multimodality, which is why this computing revolution can impact every industry,” he added.

Unlike traditional computer application development models that require new applications and new hardware to accommodate advances such as AI, Huang said generative AI can not only impact new applications, but also enhance old ones.

“Every app that exists is going to be better because of AI…it can succeed on old apps. And it’s going to have new apps. Speed of progress because it’s so easy to use , is the reason it’s growing so fast.”
