Finnish Airports Experience Significant Increase in Passengers in April, But They Remain Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

A total of 1.4 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in April this year, according to the statistics provided by Statistics Finland.

The same revealed that the number of passengers was notably higher compared to the figures of the previous year, but still a third lower compared to the figures of April 2019, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

In addition, the report shows that the number of passengers on domestic flights declined by 4 per cent, while the number of travellers on international flights marked an increase of 34 per cent compared to April last year.

According to Statistics Finland, Helsinki airport accounted for a total of 87 per cent of all travellers at domestic airports, with a total of 1.2 million passengers flying through this airport and altogether 186,000 passengers who flew through domestic airports.

It reveals that the share of travellers on international flights was 89 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 29 per cent in total at other airports in this country. Compared to the figures of April last year, the number of passengers was 26 per cent higher at Helsinki Airport as well as 16 per cent higher at other airports in Finland.

The passengers’ number at Helsinki Airport was 33 per cent lower while the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports was 43 per cent lower than in April 2019.

“Air freight and mail transport totalled 14,195 tonnes in April 2023. In all, 97 per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki Airport and 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 6,651 tonnes (47 per cent) of the transported volume of goods were incoming and 7,544 tonnes (53 per cent) were outgoing,” the statement reads.

In spite of being affected by the COVID-related restrictions, authorities in Finland have reported they welcomed a large number of international passengers.

The figures of Statistics Finland revealed that 15.6 million passengers flew through Finnish airports last year, thus accounting for a three-time increase compared to 2021 figures.

The same source showed that despite the airports in Finland experiencing a significant increase in passenger numbers last year, the figures remain below pre-pandemic levels.

Besides the figures also revealed that a total of 12.2 million passengers travelled on international flights as well as 3.4 million of them on domestic flights. In addition, it was also emphasized that in comparison to the previous two years, the relative proportion of international transport returned to pre-pandemic figures.
