Taylor Swift delivered an impassioned speech on LGBTQ rights during Pride Month, the first leg of her Time Tour in Chicago, saying her blockbuster stage presence provides a “safe space” for her queer fans.
“On this tour, I got to see some of the most beautiful and brightest people living their real lives,” Swift said. “They love who they want to love, they’re identifying who they are, and allies who support them and celebrate them with that… It’s a safe space for you. It’s your space for celebration.”
While Swift admires the “acceptance, peace and security” her concerts bring, she admits that this kind of love and tolerance is not universal. “You can’t talk about Pride Month without talking about the pain,” she said. “There, now, recently, in recent years, there is so much harmful legislation that puts people in the LGBTQ and queer communities at risk. This is for everyone, every ally, every loved one, every person in these communities It’s all painful, which is why I’m always posting, ‘This is the time for the midterms. This is the time for these important key primaries.’”
Swift continued, “Because we can provide as much support as we can during Pride month, but if we don’t do research on these elected officials — are they advocates? Are they allies? Are they equal protectors? ? Do I vote for them?” Watch her full review below.
