Evanescence’s 2003 song “Bring Me to Life” is known for its rap metal part. For a while, Amy Lee dropped this part of the song during the band’s live performances, but she recently embraced it with the help of some big names.
For Evanescence’s rendition of “Bring Me to Life” at the Rock Am Ring festival in Germany on Saturday (June 3), the band called on a new metal celebrity who had performed earlier in the day: Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix.
Shaddix is a natural fit—especially considering he pioneered the nu-metal rap genre with Papa Roach—and perfectly embodies the vocal parts sung by 12 Stones’ Paul McCoy on the original record.
Last year, Lee invited POD singer Sonny Sandoval to rap on “Bring Me to Life” at several shows.
As Lee said in an interview metal hammer Earlier this year, Evanescence was forced to include a rap section on the original recording, which the band had stopped performing years earlier.
“I stopped acting a long time ago,” Lee said. “When we were on tour, we had people who fit in that position, and they would dance to the song. We toured with POD, and we got Sonny up a few times. Obviously, if we were in the same room as Paul, who originally A town, we’ll have him there because it’s fun and it’s cool and it’s nostalgic.”
She added, “But that part, that voice, that’s not my style. That’s why it’s such a hard pill to swallow even in one song. But we won because we didn’t have to change the whole voice.”
Evanescence will be touring overseas in early September before returning to the US for the big Blue Ridge Rock Festival in Alton, Virginia on September 7th and Headliner in Atlantic City on September 8th.Tickets for US shows are available here and international performances here.
