Phil Trexler joins The Marshall Project as new Cleveland editor-in-chief


The Marshall Project, a Pulitzer Prize-winning nonprofit media organization covering criminal justice, has named Phil Trexler as the new editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project – Cleveland.

In her new position at The Marshall Project – Cleveland, Trexler will oversee the Cleveland newsroom’s investigative coverage of the Cuyahoga County criminal justice system and direct reporters on investigative, data and community engagement journalism that directly serve local audiences .

Trexler joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland from WKYC in Cleveland, where he was executive producer of investigations for nearly eight years, responsible for researching and developing investigations for television and web packages. He also worked as a newspaper reporter for more than 20 years, including 16 years covering crime and criminal justice at Akron Beacon Magazine. Trexler’s three decades in journalism have focused primarily on criminal justice issues, including police misconduct and wrongfully convicted individuals.

Trexler has received several awards for his work in broadcast, digital and print media, including one regional Edward R. Murrow and four regional Emmys. He has also been named top news writer several times by the Associated Press media editor in Ohio.

Trexler also wrote two books: The Cleveland Indians of Yesterday and Today and The Ballpark.

“Phil’s television experience and investigative expertise will come in handy at our first local newsroom, which is already making waves in high-impact journalism and has an active and diverse roster of partners on the way.” It keeps increasing,” said local managing editor Marlon Walker.

Trexler joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland’s newsroom of award-winning journalists with deep ties to the Cleveland area, including staff writers Stan Donaldson Jr., Cid Standifer and Mark Puente, as well as contributing editor Rachel Dissell and outreach manager Louis Fields .

Trexler officially joined The Marshall Project – Cleveland on June 5th.
