Pirates win slugfest, extend Mets’ skid

Ke’Bryan Hayes went 5 for 5 and had four RBIs in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 14-7 win over the visiting New York Mets on Friday.

Every starter for the Buccaneers has been hit. Carlos Santana and Jack Suwinski homered, Austin Hedges doubled and Josh Palacios had two RBIs. Pittsburgh starter Rich Hill (6-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Francisco Lindor homered, Luis Guillorme had an RBI double, and Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez had RBI singles for the Mets, who have lost their seventh straight game.

New York starter Tyler Megill (5-4) gave up nine runs, seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Guardians 10, Astros 9 (14 innings)

Will Brennan doubled in the 14th inning after Tyler Freeman tied the game and host Cleveland handed Houston its fourth straight loss.

In the first half of the 14th inning, Houston took the lead (3-0) on an RBI single by Kyle Tucker over Xzavion Curry. In the bottom half, Freeman hit Seth Martinez’s (1-2) lead on a double to score automatic runner Josh Naylor, while Brennan’s single-out double gave the Guardians their third straight win .

Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer and Jeremy Pena had four for the Astros, who went 6 for 28 with runners in scoring position and 14 on base.

Isaac Paredes hits two home runs and scores a career-high six, Tyler Glasnow pitches six strong innings to lead Tampa Bay to victory over Texas in St. Petersburg, Fla. .

Paredes hit a 3-of-4 double in the first quarter, hit a three-run homer in the third quarter and hit a two-run homer in the sixth to lead the Rays to their seventh straight win.

The Rays’ offensive outburst was more than enough for Glasnow (1-0), who allowed just one hit, six strikeouts and three walks.

Twins 3, Blue Jays 2 (10 innings)

Michael A. Taylor hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and hit a two-run homer in the 5th as Minnesota beat Toronto.

Royce Lewis added a career-best four hits for the Twins, who snapped their five-game losing streak. The Blue Jays’ three-game winning streak was terminated, although they still won seven of their past nine games.

Minnesota right-hander Sonny Gray allowed 1 run, 5 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in five innings. Toronto left-hander Yusei Kikuchi also lasted five innings, allowing two runs and four walks while striking out four.

Phillies 5, Dodgers 4

Kyle Schwarber hit a home run with two outs in the ninth as host Philadelphia beat Los Angeles to extend their winning streak to a season-best six games.

Schwarber hit four bases, added a triple and walked two, and capped off his 17th home run of the season in a win over Dodgers left-hander Caleb Ferguson (3-2).

Trea Turner had two hits against his former team, as Philly clinched a win against Detroit on Thursday and added another victory in Friday’s series opener. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman hit back-to-back home runs for the Dodgers, while Los Angeles lost for the fifth time in its past six games — all three by a hit.

Warriors 3, Nationals 2

Orlando Accia staged dramatic play for the second straight night, this time taking the lead in the eighth inning to complete a two-game winning streak and give Atlanta a win over visiting Washington.

The win extended Atlanta’s winning streak to six games, having come from behind in the last four. Arcia hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the ninth inning of Thursday’s 13-10, 10-inning win over the New York Mets, singled off shortstop CJ Abrams’ glove, scored for Eddie Rosario and took the lead.

Washington has lost five in a row. Nationals starter Josiah Gray pitched five innings with two hits, four walks and six strikeouts, allowing him to score one run — lowering his ERA to 2.36.

Cardinals 7, Reds 4

Jordan Montgomery pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first win since April 8 as St. Louis beat visiting Cincinnati.

Montgomery (3-7) struck out six and allowed just three hits and a walk. Giovanny Gallegos made his eighth save in the final four outs. Nolan Arenado, Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman hit two-run homers to give the Cardinals their second straight win.

Redskins starter Ben Lively (3-4) scored seven runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Stuart Fairchild had two hits and two RBIs for Cincinnati.

White Sox 2, Marlins 1

Luis Robert Jr. sent a walk single in the ninth inning for Chicago, which continued to soar and beat visiting Miami for its sixth major-league-best walk victory of the season.

The White Sox won their sixth game in seven games, while the Marlins’ season-high six-game winning streak was ended.

Liam Hendriks (2-0), in his fifth appearance since recovering from cancer treatment, recorded the victory with a perfect ninth-inning hit. Yasmani Grandal homered in the second inning and had three hits for the White Sox. Joey Wendle hit a home run for the Marlins, who were limited to four hits.

Diamondbacks 11, Tigers 6

Corbin Carroll hit two homers, including a grand slam, as Arizona beat slumping Detroit.

Carroll’s majors ended with a seven-game winning streak. Emmanuel Rivera had two hits, scored a three and allowed another, while Geraldo Perdomo had two hits and two runs. Arizona starter Merrill Kelly (8-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Jake Rogers hit two home runs for the Tigers, who have lost seven straight. Zack Short added two RBIs and Javier Baez scored on a single. Detroit starter Michael Lorenzen (2-3) was charged with six runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Red Sox 3, Yankees 2

Rafael Devers hit another home run off Gerrit Cole, Kenley Jansen got off the hook in the ninth, and visiting Boston beat New York in their first meeting of the season between longtime rivals.

Triston Casas had two hits and an RBI and Enrique Hernandez homered as the Red Sox snapped a six-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium for their sixth in their past 18 games win.

Josh Donaldson hit a home run for the Yankees, who fell to 1-19 when scoring two runs or fewer on the season for their third loss in four games this season. Cole (7-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, his first loss since the final regular-season game last season. Cole struck out six and walked one.

Orioles 3, Royals 2

Austin Hayes homered and doubled, starting pitcher Tyler Wells went into the seventh, and host Baltimore beat Kansas City in the opener of a three-game series.

Gunnar Henderson rang three singles and scored for the Orioles, who won back-to-back games for the first time since May 24-25. Wells (5-2) gave up two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Felix Bautista pitched a perfect nine with two strikeouts on his 17th save.

Starter Daniel Lynch (0-2) gave Hayes a homer on his first pitch of the game. He gave up three runs with eight hits and a walk in six innings. He strikes out. The Royals have lost four straight and seven of their past eight.

Athletics 5, Beer 2

Ramon Laureano hit one of two hits in two straight triples to lead Oakland to its first series win over Milwaukee, giving the worst Athletics team in the majors the first consecutive season Winning for the third time.

Oakland pitcher Luis Medina (1-5) pitched five winning innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Trevor May went 1-2-3 with two strikeouts in the ninth inning on his second save.

Brewers starter Adrian Hauser (2-2) allowed five runs on six hits over four innings. Owen Miller had two hits and a stolen base for Milwaukee.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado homered and had two hits apiece, while Brandon Dixon, Trent Grisham and Gary Sanchez also hit deep as San Diego hits Denver beat Colorado.

Jake Cronenworth had three hits and Juan Soto and Xander Bogaerts had two each to help San Diego win two games for the first time since May 25-26. Padres starter Yu Darvish (5-4) allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6 in 5 1/3 innings. Josh Hader pitched a scoreless ninth inning with 14 saves.

Mike Moustakas homered in two of his hits, and Randall Grichuk and Ryan McMahon also had two each for Colorado. The Rockies have lost five straight.

Angel 5, Sailor 4

Shohei Ohtani gave up three runs in five innings on the mound and trailed by a home run, and Mitch Moniak’s two-run homer gave Los Angeles a win over Seattle in Anaheim, Calif.

Los Angeles won its fifth straight game, while Seattle lost its fifth in six games. Ohtani matched a season-high five walks while allowing three hits and six strikeouts. He hit a two-run homer in the third to end his pitching assignment at 3-3.

Moniak broke the tie in the sixth against Mariners starter Luis Castillo (4-4), one up and two down. The Angels right fielder hit his fifth home run of the year at 97 mph over the fence at right center and took a 5-3 lead.

Cubs 3, Giants 2

Pinching hitter Nico Horner tossed a double in the seventh inning for a go-ahead score as Chicago opened a three-game road series with a win over San Francisco.

Marcus Stroman (7-4) won his fifth straight as the Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak. Stroman gave up two runs on six hits and four walks, and he struck out five. Seiya Suzuki had three hits and Tucker Barnhart drove in Chicago’s other drive.

Joc Pederson had four hits and an RBI, while Thairo Estrada doubled with a run. Anthony Desclafani (4-6) lost the game, charged with two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out two. The Giants ended their three-game winning streak.
