Amazon confirmed that it is testing the feature. The company didn’t share specific details about how it works, or which AI models it uses to summarize reviews and generate text.

“We are making significant investments in generative artificial intelligence across all of our businesses,” Amazon spokeswoman Lindsay Shanahan said in a statement.

Amazon has long relied on artificial intelligence and machine learning to deliver targeted ads and personalized recommendations to shoppers. But the recent frenzy around generative artificial intelligence and chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has prompted companies, including Amazon, to pay more attention to the technology. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in April that generative artificial intelligence and large language models will “transform and improve almost every customer experience.”

Using AI to summarize reviews could prove useful to shoppers. Recently, some shoppers have started using chatbots to write Amazon reviews for them.

Trust has long been an issue for Amazon. Fake reviews have flooded the site and other online marketplaces, and many companies have turned to a combination of human moderation and automated tools to weed them out.
