U.S. President Joe Biden will meet with artificial intelligence experts in San Francisco on Tuesday, according to a White House official, as the U.S. government continues to grapple with how best to regulate the technology.

The visit comes as many in Washington seek to learn more about the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence to society, so they don’t repeat the lack of early regulation of social media and other internet technologies.

Biden is expected to meet with eight experts involved in artificial intelligence research or publicizing its potential impact. They include:

  • Humanities Technology Center Co-founder and executive director Tristan Harris, former design ethicist Google He is also known for criticizing technology platforms in the documentary “The Social Dilemma.”
  • common sense media Founder and CEO Jim Steyer, who advocates for policies that provide a safer internet experience for families.
  • Algorithmic Justice League Founder Joy Buolamwin, whose organization raises awareness of the potential impact and bias that AI can have further in society.
  • Khan Academy Sal Khan, founder and CEO who runs an online education nonprofit.

The issue has generated a lot of discussion within the Biden administration, with White House chiefs meeting two to three times a week to discuss AI, according to a White House official.

In May, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted AI executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Shortly afterward, Altman testified before Congress as lawmakers considered how to set the rules of the road for technology to mitigate bias and deal with the impact on the workforce, among other things.

Biden is also expected to raise money for his 2024 re-election campaign during his trip west. Associated Press.
