Anwar says ‘not realistic’ for Malaysia to achieve net-zero by itself

PM: 'Unrealistic' for Malaysia to achieve net-zero energy target alone

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, but the Southeast Asian nation cannot do it alone, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

“It’s unrealistic that they expect developing countries like Malaysia to do it themselves,” Anwar told CNBC’s JP Ong at the Asia Energy Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

March, International Renewable Energy Agency forecast Malaysia needs to double its renewable energy transition investment to at least US$375 billion to achieve its 2050 net-zero emissions target.

Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to the goals, but said developed country partners “must understand that transformation takes time and investment” and that they must “play their part”.

Anwar added: “A radical move will come at the expense of our education, our health and our development. But in terms of commitment, it is there. The transition plan is there. The energy transition has started, it has started.”
