On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals battled through the rain to finish a doubleheader against the New York Yankees, winning the first game by a final score of 11-4, while dropping the second game 6-2.

Drew VerHagen struggled in the ninth inning of the first game, allowing three runs before ultimately shutting the door on the Yanks.

According to Katie Woo, who covers the Cardinals for The Athletic, it appears that the Cardinals will be placing the veteran right-hander on the 15-Day Injured List.

Woo announced that because of VerHagen’s injury, the Cardinals may see a bullpen shakeup over the next few days, especially with a starter needed in Miami.

The Cardinals called up Dakota Hudson on Saturday as the 27th man for the doubleheader.

With VerHagen down, the Cardinals may keep Hudson around after he pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Matthew Liberatore.

Both Liberatore and Jack Flaherty follow Adam Wainwright in the rotation, but would only be on three days of rest after Wainwright’s start, which means St. Louis will need a starter.

VerHagen joined the Cardinals prior to the 2022 season on a two-year, $6.5 million contract.

He missed most of 2022 with a hip injury, but went 3-1 with a 6.65 ERA.

This season hasn’t been much better for the right-hander.

He owns a record of 4-0, but has an ERA of 4.78 in his 35 appearances.

Jake Woodford was recently placed on the injured list, which resulted in the Cardinals calling up James Naile.

No corresponding move has been announced for VerHagen just yet, and the reason for him landing on the injured list is still unknown as of now.
