Nick Hexum reunites with Kyle Meredith to discuss the 30th anniversary of 311’s debut album, musicand the 20th anniversary evolutionary.

The frontman reflects on his admiration for early REM and The Clash, and shares how his confidence in his band developed during high school. He emphasized the 311’s melodic contrast to the more aggressive rock bands of the time, typified by the likes of Limp Bizkit and Korn, and the grunge bands that came before them.

“I remember people from A&R telling me they were looking for the next Eddie Vedder,” he said of the time. “But we’re more interested in this mix of music — like Jane’s Addiction, (Red Hot) Chili Peppers, Wishbone, Beastie Boys in a way — and that’s what really excites us.”

Hexum also praised Ben Folds’ lyricism and acknowledged the Beatles’ significant influence on the music world. evolutionary. He then briefly describes their upcoming record, noting that it features a heavier sound with lots of tuned-down guitars.
