Tensions on France’s streets ease, arrests on Sunday night down

Fewer than 160 people were arrested in riots in several French cities after a teenager was killed by police, the interior ministry said on Monday.

The relative calm after five nights of serious unrest came as a relief to Emmanuel Macron’s government in its fight to regain control just months after unpopular pension reforms sparked widespread protests. A year before hosting the Summer Olympics.

The Interior Ministry said 157 people were arrested overnight, down from more than 700 the night before and more than 1,300 on Friday night.

Provisional figures showed that of the 45,000 police officers deployed overnight, three people were injured and some 350 buildings and 300 vehicles were damaged.

The grandmother of a teenager shot dead by police during a traffic jam on the outskirts of Paris said on Sunday she hoped the nationwide unrest over his killing would end.

Since last Tuesday’s killings, rioters have set fire to cars, looted shops and attacked City Hall and other properties, including the mayor’s residence in the Paris suburbs, where the mayor’s wife and children were sleeping on Saturday was attacked.
