Branham is one of two forgotten prospects in the Spurs’ 2022 draft class.
Meanwhile, the Spurs haven’t had a highly-lauded rookie in Summer League in a quarter-century. In Game 1 against the Portland Trail Blazers, 21-year-old Tim Duncan was completely tripped over by 19-year-old pro forward Jermaine O’Neal.Next out, Greg Ostertag went 7-2 and averaged a career-high 7 points per game beat him 21 points and 10 rebounds. A year later, he amassed the most rookie box plus-minus in league history, and two years later, he hung the first of five championship banners from the rafters.
What should we expect from Wembanyama?
Winbanyama is two years younger than Duncan and at a greater physical disadvantage, as his frame looks like it’s been stretched by one of Willy Wonka’s machines. With the increased floor spacing, the quickness that Wenby displays in a 7-foot-3 (½) inch frame will make his pick-and-roll coverage and switchability worth watching.
We’ll preview it all. Numbers don’t matter. We’ll just see how he fits in rehearsals before the real show starts in October.
