Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star outfielder Corbin Carroll avoided a serious shoulder injury and started Friday night against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates

Carroll withdrew with a shoulder injury in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 9-0 loss to New York. He underwent an MRI on Friday, which came back clean.

“The MRI didn’t show anything,” Arizona coach Tori Lovulo said before Friday’s game. “What happened – everyone wants to know. I’ve been told he felt something, similar to a stinger in football … it scares Corbyn and scares us all.”

“Taking him out at that point in the game was a matter of course, evaluating him in these circumstances and he was in the squad today.”

Carroll served as the second hitter and played centerfield. He described how he felt as he swung in the seventh.

“I was swinging, and as I was swinging back, I felt a change in my shoulder, a shocking tingling down my arm, and my hand went numb,” Carroll said. Holding it, thinking it was coming out of a socket. Almost thought the season was over.”

It was Carroll’s second right shoulder injury in seven days. It’s the same shoulder he’s undergoing surgery on in 2021.

Lovulo said Carroll has a history of right shoulder problems, leading the 22-year-old star to immediately realize there was a problem.

“He had his shoulder surgically repaired, and when something wasn’t quite right, I think he — because he could feel and understand things — it would frustrate him,” Lovulo said.

Carroll hit .290 with 18 homers, 46 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 83 games. He’s a leading candidate for National League Rookie of the Year and has been mentioned in MVP contention.

Carroll is also looking forward to Tuesday’s All-Star Game in his hometown of Seattle.

Arizona also made a series of moves on Friday, promoting outfielder Dominique Canzone and right-hander Justin Martinez from Triple-A Reno, selecting outfielder Dominique Fletcher to Reno, and moving right-hander De Ray Jameson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list, assigning lefty Conor Pilkington the assignment.

Lovulo said he was concerned about Jameson, who threw three relievers in Thursday’s game against the Mets.
