Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Emoni Bates has been finding his rhythm at the NBA Summer League.

During his first two games, Bates wasn’t very impressive but he got into a good flow on Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bates scored 21 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from the three-point line and gave Cleveland fans something to be happy about.

Following the game, Bates reflected on his performance as well as another NBA team that caught his eye during the draft process.

According to Damichael Cole, Bates was “definitely” interested in being drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies.

And the reason was because of that team’s lead star.

“Ja. That’s like my big brother,” Bates said.

Bates and Ja Morant have a close relationship.

It started when both were playing in Memphis.

Bates was with the Memphis Tigers while Morant was, of course, leading the Grizzlies.

Morant gave Bates some helpful advice and guidance as he traversed college basketball and overcame his own struggles, some of which were mental.

Morant has publicly been a big proponent of basketball players taking care of their mental health and Bates said his assistance was crucial.

Although Bates eventually got drafted by the Cavaliers, it is clear that he has a close friend in Morant and more advice and guidance could be coming.

However, it’ll be some time before Bates and Morant get to square off against each other on the court.

Morant is set to miss the first 25 games of next season because of a suspension handed down by the league.

During that absence, Bates may find a regular spot in Cleveland’s rotation.
