China’s exports shrank more than expected in June, hit by a contraction in global demand and fueling concerns about the world’s second-largest economy.

The dollar value of China’s exports fell 12.4 percent in June from a year earlier, customs data showed on Thursday. The drop was much bigger than the 9.5% decline expected in a Reuters poll and the 7.5% annual drop in May.

Imports fell 6.8% year-over-year in June, also below expectations for a 4% decline and May’s 4.5% annual decline.

Lu Daliang, a spokesman for China’s General Administration of Customs, said at a press conference on Thursday that China’s trade remained under pressure in the second half of the year, partly due to high inflation in developed countries and geopolitical factors.
