Lior Phillips talks with Kyle Meredith about her new book, South African Pop (Genre: A 33 1/3 Series) – a great summer read we recommend as part of our summer gear guide.

Author and podcast host (view this must be a show On the Consequence Podcast Network! ) took Meredith through what attracted her to South African music in the first place, and the stories she ultimately tried to tell through her work. She explains how the political landscape affects the arts in the region, the influence of American music and the sad history behind “Lions Sleep Tonight.”

Phillips goes on to talk about Paul Simon’s complicated era Gracelandthe interaction between Angélique Kidjo and Talking Heads, and how Disney black panther and live action lion king. She also elaborated on why she cringes at the term “world music.”

“I absolutely cringe when I hear the words ‘world music,’ and my whole body cringes like a pretzel because it romanticizes the vastness of our world,” she explains. “Geographically it’s true, but we’re so connected more than anyone wants to know.”
