Grant Williams Gets Honest On His Trash-Talking Approach

During his four seasons with the Boston Celtics, Grant Williams was known as an aggressive and sometimes hotheaded player who wasn’t afraid of going toe-to-toe with opponents.

His trash-talking on the court occasionally got him into trouble and garnered him some negative attention.

But Williams isn’t looking for a fight, he says.

Speaking to JJ Redick on The Old Man & The Three, Williams claimed that his trash-talking was always just a response to other players.

“I feel like I’m always a reactor,” Williams said, adding that he’s “not necessarily chasing guys to talk trash.”

If you are talking about Williams and trash talk, you have to mention his recent run-in with Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat.

The Celtics and Heat met in the Eastern Conference Finals and things were antagonistic from the start.

In the second game of the series, Williams and Butler really tangled, getting into each others’ faces and saying something that fans couldn’t hear.

Williams stated that it began when Butler said “he ain’t here.”

When he later made a shot, Williams said, “I’m here” and got very close to Butler.

This only escalated later, when Butler came back to Williams with his own “I’m here” statement after a shot.

It was clearly intense but Williams feels he wasn’t the one to start it.

That sort of fight and attitude might help Williams out in his new role with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks aren’t known for a team that gets very aggressive.

But they have been struggling lately so perhaps some extra trash-talking from Williams and others could give them a boost.
