Shohei Ohtani hits 36th homer as Angels beat Pirates

Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 36th homer of the season, Luis Rengifo hit two and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5 in a three-game series in Anaheim, California.

Andrew Velasquez and Lengifor hit back-to-back home runs in four innings of the fifth inning to open the game for the Angels, with four home runs for the Los Angeles hitters on the day.

The Angels are 6-3 after nine home games. Tyler Anderson (5-2) struck out five and allowed four runs in six innings against his former team. Carlos Estevez made his 23rd save with two outs in the ninth.

With Pittsburgh trailing 7-1, Carlos Santana closed the game with a two-run double from Jacob Webb in the seventh inning of four-run play. The Buccaneers were tied by two runners in the final two innings, their seventh loss in the last nine games.

Brian Reynolds hit a solo home run for the Buccaneers in the first inning.

Tigers 3, Padres 1

Alex Faedo pitched six scoreless innings as Detroit salvaged the end of a three-game series with a win over visiting San Diego.

Fedor (2-4) gave up just one hit, though he did dish out four hits. Alex Lange’s scoreless ninth inning, his 17th save of the season, ended the win. Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibanez each hit solo homers in support of Faedo.

San Diego starter Joe Musgrove (9-3) allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in his first loss since May 20. Gary Sanchez kicks off on the Padres’ solo run.

Yankees 8, Royals 5

Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run in more than two months and had a season-high four hits in host New York’s win over Kansas City.

Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer to spark New York’s four-run start against Jordan Lyles (1-12). Torres’ 16th homer extended his hit streak to a career-high 13 games.

The Royals’ Salvador Perez hit a solo homer in the fourth, Michael Massey hit a two-run run in the sixth, and New York starter Luis Severino (2-4) allowed 3 runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Nationals 6, Giants 1

MacKenzie Gore pitched a gameless five innings, Riley Adams hit a home run and Washington completed its first series sweep of the season by beating visiting San Francisco.

Gore (6-7) struck out eight and walked two while allowing four hits. Lane Thomas had three hits, two runs, a drive and a stolen four as the Nationals grabbed their fourth three-game winning streak of the season.

Joc Pederson hit a lead-off homer in the seventh for the Giants, who have lost their fifth straight game. Scott Alexander (6-1) was used as San Francisco’s opener. He hit two of the four hitters he faced, and they all scored.

Phillies 8, Guards 5 (10 innings)

Bryce Harper hit two runs, including the first of four in the 10th inning, as Philadelphia avoided a sweep after giving up a tie-breaking ninth homer in a loss to host Cleveland.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola struggled after allowing runs in the first three innings and went scoreless for the next four innings before Gregory Soto shut out Cleveland in the eighth. But Phillies closer Craig Kimbrel hit a home run to David Fry to send the game into overtime.

However, the Phillies quickly recovered and pulled the game away in the tenth quarter. Harper hit Johan Rojas with a single in the decisive half. JT Realmuto scored Trea Turner on a sacrifice fly before Alec Bohm hit Harper and Bryson Stott to end the four-run run.

Reds 7, Diamondbacks 3

Jake Fraley hit a double homer in the sixth to take the lead, and Cincinnati pulled the game away in the eighth while beating visiting Arizona to sweep a three-game series.

Fraley’s hit tipped first baseman Spencer Steer. Steele followed up with a single in the eighth, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s single led to two more runs.

Six relievers combined for five scoreless innings as Cincinnati won its fifth straight game. Derek Law (4-4), the second reliever, won with a scoreless inning. Arizona’s Tyler Gilbert (0-1) took the loss by giving up the Reds’ lead in the sixth.

Orioles 5, Rays 3

Gunnar Henderson homered on two hits and four pitchers combined for three to lead Baltimore over Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Ryan O’Hearn’s solo homer in the sixth inning tied the game 3-3 for the Orioles, who left the Rays with a two-game lead over the AL East. Mike Bowman (7-0) went no-hit and scoreless in 2 2/3 innings to earn the win, Yennier Cano went no-hitter in the eighth, and Felix Bautista allowed two singles in the ninth before striking out Wander Franco to secure his 28th save.

Yandy Diaz hit a home run for the Rays, who have lost seven of their past eight games.

Marlins 3, Rockies 2 (10 innings)

Luis Arraez hit a right-running single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Miami snapped an eight-game losing streak with a win over visiting Colorado.

Aras went 3-of-4 from the field, including his first career knockdown of Rockies player Pierce Johnson (1-5). Arras also played a key RBI double, chasing the score into a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Marlins starter Jesús Luzardo remained undecided despite striking out a career-high 13 batters.

Rockies designated hitter Randall Grichuk hit a tying solo homer in the ninth to send his team into overtime. Brenton Doyle is also deep in Colorado.

Warriors 4, Brewers 2

Ozzie Albies hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help visiting Atlanta beat Milwaukee in a three-game series between the division leaders.

Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuna Jr. hit base for the Braves, Albies hit his 23rd homer, and Elvis Peguero’s (1-3) first pitch 407 feet over the center field wall gave Atlanta a 4-2 lead. The three-point run was the first in 10 games in the Brewers bullpen and ended a streak of 29 scoreless innings.

Desibel Hernandez (1-0) made his major league debut with a strikeout in the seventh inning for the win.

Twins 5, White Sox 4 (12 innings)

Ryan Jeffers singled Kyle Farmer in the bottom of the 12th inning, and Minnesota rallied in Minneapolis to sweep Chicago in three games.

Emilio Pagan pitched a no-hitter 12th inning to seal the win for the Twins, who scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to overtime. Minnesota is 8-2 since the All-Star break.

Zach Remillard hit two hits, including his first home run in the majors, and drove in two runs, while Eloy Jimenez also homered for Chicago, which finished 3-6 on a nine-game road trip that included games against the Mets in Atlanta and New York.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 2

Cody Bellinger continued his hot pace with a two-run homer and three RBIs, and Jameson Taillon allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings as host Chicago beat St. Louis to win the four-game series.

Bellinger opened the first inning with his seventh home run of the month, then dedicated a sacrifice fly in Chicago’s five-run third inning. Tyronn (4-6) gave up seven hits while striking out six, and his only run came with two strikeouts in the sixth of Dylan Carlson’s first of two RBI singles of the day.

St. Louis’ Jordan Montgomery (6-8) allowed seven runs (five earned) in six innings with six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Nolan Arenado had three hits for the Cardinals.

Rangers 8, Dodgers 4

Jonah Heim and Leody Taveras scored two points each to help Texas overcome an early four-point deficit to beat Los Angeles in Arlington, Texas.

After losing the first two games of the series, Texas bounced back with a strong offensive performance. Brad Miller joined Ezequiel Duran on two hits and scored twice in the win. Martin Perez (8-3) settled down after allowing four runs in the first inning. He allowed four runs in six innings and struck out six in six innings for the win.

Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan (3-1) allowed eight runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings, suffering their first loss of the season.

Astros 3, Athletics 2

Mauricio Dubon hit a two-out two-run homer in the top of the ninth to break the tie and give Houston a win over host Oakland.

Both starters were good, but nothing. Houston’s Hunter Brown allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. Oakland’s Luis Medina allowed one run on two hits after five innings.

Yana Diaz had two hits, including his 11th homer, for the Astros, who needed just five total hits for their third win in four games in the series. JJ Bleday scored two for the A’s, while Jordan Diaz scored two and one.

Blue Jays 4, Sailors 3

Backup hitter Santiago Espinal took the lead in the seventh as visiting Toronto beat Seattle to save the final game of the three-game series.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Brandon Belt hit home runs for the second straight day for the Blue Jays, who extended their lead over Seattle to 4 1/2 games in the American League’s third and final wild-card playoff berth.

Mike Ford led a deep offense for the Mariners, who ended a three-game winning streak and finished with a 5-5 record in 10 home games.
