On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals began their selloff, trading away pitchers Jordan Hicks and Jordan Montgomery.

Hicks is headed to the Toronto Blue Jays, while Montgomery is headed to the Texas Rangers.

Interestingly, the Cardinals made some odd history with Sunday’s trades.

For the first time since August of 2020, a team traded away two players with the same first name on the same day.

The last time it took place, the Seattle Mariners traded away Austin Nola and Austin Adams.

According to Baseball Reference, this marks the 124th time in Major League history that a team has dealt two or more players with the same first name on the same day.

This is certainly a unique bit of history.

This has happened several times in the history of baseball.

Still, it is considered a rare occurrence, as the last time something like this happened was three years ago.

Hicks and Montgomery were drawing interest from several teams.

Ultimately, the Cardinals traded them both on the same day and added some high-end prospects to replenish their minor league system.

Hicks had taken over as the team’s closer in the absence of Ryan Helsley.

He made his Major League debut in 2018 and became a viable back-end reliever for St. Louis.

Montgomery had been the Cardinals’ most consistent starter this season.

St. Louis shipped Harrison Bader to the New York Yankees in exchange for Montgomery last year at the trade deadline.

Now, both Jordans are set to embark on new journeys with new teams who are contending for a World Series title.
