Mets Get Roasted By The Hometown NYC Papers

There is a myth in baseball that says New York sports media is punishing and ruthless.

Well, it’s not always like that.

Sometimes, it’s even worse.

Newspapers had a field day on Tuesday after the New York Mets sold at the deadline after spending hundreds of millions of dollars on free agents in the last two seasons; and the New York Yankees added only a middle reliever to solve their multiple issues.

Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted three back pages of New York papers: Newsday, the New York Daily News, and the New York Post.

“Wait Till NOT Next Year,” Newsday’s headline reads, an analysis of the Mets’ decision to trade Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, David Robertson, Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, and other assets that now put their 2024 chances in jeopardy.

The Post titled it “The $500 Million Bust” and highlights how the Mets had to tear things down after owner Steve Cohen spent nearly half a billion dollars on players.

The Daily News also discussed the Mets’ downfall while also criticizing the Yanks.

“Mets send Verlander back to Astros as Uncle Steve learns $364 million can’t buy a World Series… so, unlike the Yankees, at least they do something”, they wrote.

Ouch.

Both New York teams are in really tough spots when it comes to making the 2023 playoffs.

The Yankees might have more of a chance but they didn’t really acquire too much talent, and they also didn’t sell so they did nothing to improve their 2023 chances or their future.

It’s not a good time to be a Mets or Yankees fan.
