On Friday night, St. Louis Cardinals top prospect Masyn Winn made his Major League debut and also picked up his first Major League hit against the New York Mets.

However, after he picked up his first big-league hit, Mets first baseman and slugger Pete Alonso found himself at the center of attention for all the wrong reasons, as he tossed the ball into the stands instead of into the Cardinals dugout.

This resulted in some words being exchanged between him and the Cardinals’ dugout.

After the Mets pulled away with a 7-1 victory over the Cards, Alonso was asked about the moment in which he threw the ball into the stands, and he expressed contrition for his mistake.

Alonso constantly reiterated that he felt extreme remorse over what took place.

Fans in St. Louis began to boo him and were all over him for the rest of the night.

After the game, Alonso said he had a “brain fart” in that moment.

He said he understood why fans and those in the Cardinals dugout were angry at him and acknowledged that he may have robbed Winn of a special moment.

The Mets slugger also recalled his first big-league hit and how the ball was thrown back to the Mets dugout.

He said that it ultimately made him regret his decision to throw the ball into the stands even more.

Alonso was very blunt in his assessment of what took place as well, even saying he felt like “a piece of crap” and “an idiot” after what took place.

However, he took responsibility for the incident and continued to express contrition.
