The Golden State Warriors have a bit of a situation on their hands right now.
Klay Thompson has yet to sign a contract extension, and judging by the latest reports, that’s not going to change any time soon.
Last week, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that extension talks between both parties had stalled.
Now, Shams Charania adds that there’s “a significant gap” between what Thompson wants and what the Warriors are willing to give him, both in terms of money and years.
Reporting on @RunItBackFDTV: There’s a significant gap in extension negotiations for Golden State and Klay Thompson, league sources say, as current signs point to the four-time champion going into 2024 free agency. pic.twitter.com/0U0wSXo0hR

Charania adds that the Warriors do want to take care of him and pay him, but they also want to see how this season turns out, which is why he believes that Thompson will have a huge chip on his shoulder this season.
Needless to say, the fans had plenty to say about that.

Klay will have one of the most interesting legacies of all-time. Definitely underrated overall, but late-career Klay is an interesting conversation.

The insider stated that all signs point toward Thompson becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Notably, Thompson has always talked about his desire to stay in the Bay Area for the remainder of his career, and he’s always been a team-first kind of guy.
That makes it an interesting negotiation.
It’s hard to envision the Warriors lowballing him so much that he ends up leaving, especially after the way they handled things with Draymond Green this offseason.
Thompson might not be in his prime anymore, but he’s been pivotal in taking that franchise to the top of the world.
They owe him that much, and it would be a terrible look for the new front office not to do right by him.
