Bears Add A Veteran On Defense Ahead Of Primetime Game

More than halfway through the 2023 NFL season, the Chicago Bears are in last place in the NFC North with a 3-8 record, and it seems they have nothing left to play for, other than perhaps a shot a drafting University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams.

While third-year quarterback Justin Fields has continued to struggle and is clearly not Chicago’s long-term solution under center, their defense has been their biggest problem, as they rank 29th in points allowed and 30th in passing touchdowns given up.

Per Adam Schefter, the team is signing veteran safety Adrian Colbert to be a part of its practice squad.

Colbert is in his sixth season in the NFL after playing three seasons of college ball at the University of Texas and one other year at the University of Miami.

He was taken in the seventh round of the 2017 draft by the San Francisco 49ers, and he spent his first two seasons with them, where he started 12 of 21 games and recorded 58 tackles (49 solo) and six passes defended.

But he suffered a high ankle sprain midway through the 2018 season, and he ended up being waived in September 2019.

Colbert has been a member of eight teams since then, and he has gotten onto the field for game action with five of them.

The Bears were the last team he played for, and last season, he appeared in two contests for them exclusively as a special teamer.

They will face a challenging schedule to close out the year, and they will visit the Minnesota Vikings, who recently went on a five-game winning streak, on Monday Night Football in Week 12.
