Hill is right – a quarterback has won the award 46 times, whereas a receiver has never won MVP.
But non-quarterbacks have won as well: 18 running backs, one linebacker, one defensive lineman, and one kicker.
Hill could certainly become the first wideout to do it, but he appears to have realized he’s only putting up record-breaking numbers because of his quarterback.
Tagovailoa also has a case for the award with 3,457 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
His passing yards rank third in the league, his touchdowns rank second but his interceptions are tied for fourth.
Tagovailoa is also completing 70.1 percent of his passes this season, slightly behind San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy – another MVP candidate.
Hill isn’t the first NFL player to admit the MVP award is for quarterbacks, either: Former Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals defense end J.J. Watt recently noted that no other position could ever be more valuable than a quarterback.
But anything can happen in the final five games.
