Former New York Jets running back Dalvin Cook needs a new home after being released earlier this week.

He was used sparingly in his lone season with the Jets and now has the opportunity to play for a playoff-caliber team – either via the waiver wire or in unrestricted free agency.

Plenty of teams will likely look at the 28-year-old four-time Pro Bowler, but Fox Sports analyst Michael Irvin thinks the Dallas Cowboys should ultimately be the team to bring him in for their postseason run.

“Absolutely they should. They need it. It is right in the area, right now, that they’re lacking the production but also they are having a number of injuries. Deuce Vaughn has been hurt. Rico Dowdle has been hurt,” Irvin said. “Can you use a Dalvin Cook going into the postseason right now? Absolutely you can use him,” Irvin said.

This is as much a depth issue as it is a personnel issue for Dallas.

Tony Pollard is the starter, but backups Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn have been injured all season – Vaughn is now on injured reserve with an ankle issue, while Dowdle has dealt with an ankle ailment all season.

The Cowboys will need to bring in at least one more running back to fill out the depth chart, and Cook would be the best option out there.

He is an experienced running back who has fresh legs because of how limited he was used on the Jets this season.

Cook is also motivated to compete for a team with serious Super Bowl aspirations and would undoubtedly give Dallas some pop in between the tackles and at the goal line.
