Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh flirted with an NFL head coaching comeback in 2022 and now it looks as though he’ll deliver on returning to the NFL in 2024 after nine seasons in the college ranks.

The former San Francisco 49ers head coach interviewed with a few teams this offseason after he won the College Football Playoff championship but it looks as though the Los Angeles Chargers are on the brink of inking Harbaugh to a new deal.

“This feels like we’re in the zone where something could happen between the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh in the near future,” Garafolo said. “My understanding is that it’s an extremely strong offer that they’ve made to him financially.”

The Chargers always sounded like the perfect destination for Harbaugh because of the personnel already in place there and his connections to California.

Los Angeles has a franchise-caliber quarterback in Justin Herbert and quality talent on offense and defense that makes a return to the postseason a bit easier than a standard teardown and rebuild.

Harbaugh has also already coached the 49ers and in college at Stanford and San Diego.

The next phase, if Harbaugh does indeed join the Chargers, is who the general manager of the team will be, how the team will structure the reporting organization between GM, owner, and coach and which assistants Harbaugh would bring with him to Los Angeles.

The Chargers will also play the Baltimore Ravens in 2024, meaning the NFL will get another Harbaugh Bowl between brothers John and Jim.
