Vikings Worked Out Veteran Running Back

The quarterback position has been the position that has been talked about the most when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings this offseason.

They signed veteran Sam Darnold to a one-year deal earlier this offseason before drafting J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in April’s draft.

While head coach Kevin O’Connell closely watches that competition, the running back position is at an interesting point too.

After moving on veteran Alexander Mattison, the team signed former Packers Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones to a one-year deal after Green Bay failed to bring him back.

Even with the multi-time 1,000-yard rusher appearing to be the starter, that hasn’t stopped the Vikings from looking to add more depth at that position for training camp.

According to insider Aaron Wilson, the Vikings recently worked out veteran back Trenton Cannon, who is now fully recovered from a recent Achilles injury.

The 30-year-old and former sixth-round pick of the New York Jets in 2018 has played on five teams in five career seasons (2018-2022).

He has not quite been able to get his career off the ground seeing as his best year as a pro came when he was a rookie with the Jets.

The former Virginia State star poured in 38 rushing attempts for 113 yards and a touchdown, along with 17 receptions for 144 yards that year.

Behind Jones on the Vikings’ roster sits veterans Ty Chandler and Myles Gaskin, which is why it is unlikely that Cannon could earn a job in Minnesota for the season if he were to sign with the club.

Time will tell to see if he gets a new opportunity or not.
