J.D. Martinez, Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez hit home runs in the third inning for the host New York Mets on Friday night, who clinched the first of a four-game series. The momentum continued with an 8-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the second game.

The Mets extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 15-7 this month, leading the Braves in the race for the National League's first wild-card berth. The Warriors suffered a season-high six-game losing streak in July, falling to 8-12.

Mets starter Kodai Senga (1-0), making his first appearance since a shoulder injury in February, struck out nine and allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings. He exited with a strained left calf and will undergo an MRI on Saturday.

The Mets put 10 batters on base in the third inning, scoring seven runs against Braves starters Charlie Morton (5-6) and Desbell Hernandez.

Red Sox 9, Yankees 7

Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run single in center field to highlight a three-run eighth inning that helped Boston beat visiting New York in the series opener.

The Red Sox rallied after Aaron Judge and Austin Wells hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning, giving the Yankees a 7-4 lead in the seventh inning. Judge hit a 3-pointer to center to take the lead.

With the Yankees leading 7-6 in the eighth inning, Boston went two outs with reliever Luke Weaver (4-2) before Wilyer Abreu pitched to Reliever Clay Holmes hit a game-tying single. This allowed Yoshida to deliver the game-deciding blow.

Guardians 3, Phillies 1

Ben Lively allowed one run and three hits in six innings to help visiting Cleveland defeat Philadelphia. Lively (9-6) made his major league debut with the Phillies in 2017, striking out six batters and walking two while snapping a three-game hitting streak.

David Fry and Angel Martinez each had an RBI and Bo Naylor added a run-scoring sacrifice bunt to help Cleveland advance in four games. Three wins.

Philadelphia's Bryson Stout hit a home run in the fifth inning to cut the home team's deficit to 3-1. Stout had singles in both the seventh and ninth inning for the Phillies, who allowed just six hits and committed two errors, leading to their seventh in ten games. Lost once.

Jurickson Profar's second two-run homer of the game broke a ninth-inning tie and sparked San Diego's six-game winning streak over host Baltimore.

The two-out blast was Profar's 18th homer of the season and came from Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel (6-3), who was roughed up for the second straight day . Padres reliever Robert Suarez (5-1) earned the win, playing well over the final 1 2/3 innings despite missing a save opportunity in the eighth.

Jordan Westberg and Anthony Santander homered for the Orioles, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

Mariners 10, White Sox 0

Josh Rojas, Dylan Moore and Victor Robles hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and George Kirby A solid seven games helped Seattle defeat host Chicago.

Javier Baez homered for Detroit for the second straight game. Cade Montero (1-4) allowed six runs (five earned) and eight hits in five innings. Before the game, Detroit All-Star outfielder Riley Green was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring.

Salvador Perez homered and Brady Singer pitched seven strong innings as Kansas City defeated visiting Chicago.

Singer (7-6) allowed two singles and two walks and also struck out five batters. The Royals scored in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Adam Frazier, an RBI single by Vinnie Pasquantino and a three-run homer by Perez.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks (2-9) allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings. Seiya Suzuki had two of Chicago's four hits.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had three hits and the game-winner on a wild pitch to help Arizona beat Pittsburgh in Phoenix.

Joc Pederson homered and Eugenio Suarez had two hits to help Arizona win for the ninth time in its last 12 games. Arizona starter Zach Gallen (8-5) gave up three runs and five hits over six-plus innings. He struck out six and walked three.

Joshua Palacios had a two-run single for Pittsburgh, which lost for the fourth time in its last 14 games. Andrew McCutchen scored once and added another for the Pirates, who held just 1 point on 11 shots from scoring position.

Red Team 3, Rays 2 (10 innings)

Stuart Fairchild doubled the tiebreaker in the 10th inning and Cincinnati opened a three-game league series with Tampa Bay with a victory in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Brian De La Cruz and Jake Berger hit three-run home runs in the first inning to help visiting Miami beat Milwaukee in the first game of a three-game series.

Josh Bell scored in the ninth for Miami, which has the worst record in the National League but has won three of its past four games. Miami left-hander Trevor Rogers (2-9) limited Milwaukee to two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Seth Brown, who went 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI single in the sixth inning that had the umpire overturned to break a tie and give Oakland a win over Los Angeles in Anaheim, California.

The Athletics trailed 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but Brent Rooker's two-out, two-run homer tied the game. Later in the inning, Brown drove in two runs against Angels reliever Hans Krause (4-1). Brown's infielder to right was initially ruled a foul, but it was overturned on review for an RBI single.

Tyler Fitzgerald hit two home runs, Kyle Harrison had 11, and San Francisco opened a four-game homestand with a blowout victory over Colorado State The beginning of the series.

Jorge Soler hits sixth pitch off Kyle Freeland for his 12th homer of the season, giving Giants their sixth win in their last 16 games . Soler had three hits, four runs and three RBIs.

Fitzgerald, who hit just eight career homers on the night, connected again after Soler's sixth home run to end his first multi-homer game. . The blast gave him eight points on the season.
