At the beginning of the NFL preseason, tweaks are made here or there to both improve and balance out a team’s roster.

The Cincinnati Bengals recently announced a couple of moves they made ahead of their upcoming first preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Those moves include the signings of defensive linemen Andre Carter and Joshua Pryor, placing veteran defensive end Cam Sample on the Reserve/Injured List, and waiving punter Austin McNamara and wide receiver Tre Mosley.

Starting with Carter, the Indiana product signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent back in May but was waived in July.

Pryor, a second-year defensive tackle out of Bowie State, played in seven games for the Washington Commanders as a rookie in 2023 and recorded one tackle before getting waived this offseason.

These moves were likely made due to the Achilles injury suffered by veteran defensive end Cam Sample at practice earlier this week, which is why he was placed on the Reserve/Injured List.

McNamara and Mosley were signed as college free agents but neither made any strides with the Bengals during training camp.

All of these transactions are typical training camp and preseason moves that are made by all teams, but the Bengals are looking to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2021.

That is why their moves are going to be looked at a bit differently.
