Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is never one to sugarcoat his words, and he couldn’t have liked what he saw in Friday night’s 20-12 preseason loss to the Houston Texans.

After the game, Tomlin shared his honest thoughts on what was a somewhat disappointing performance from his squad.

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor shared a quote from Tomlin after the game, and the coach described his squad’s performance by saying it was “really a sloppy performance, to be honest with you.”

In terms of the game being sloppy, Tomlin was surely referring to his team’s four fumbles (three of which were recovered), three sacks, an interception, and a missed extra point.

Pittsburgh’s defense also saw four Texans quarterbacks combine to go 19-for-31 for 175 yards and a touchdown.

In terms of bright spots, Justin Fields looked solid throwing the ball as he completed five of his six passes for 67 yards in his debut despite his two fumbles and two sacks that looked to stem from unfamiliarity with his new offensive line and should be correctable.

Unfortunately, Tomlin did mention after the game that the two fumbles negated a lot of the positives that Fields showed and that this is an issue that has to be fixed going forward.

Kyle Allen was 17-for-23 for 193 yards and a touchdown in relief while also throwing a pick.

Pittsburgh also ran the ball fairly well with 109 yards on 25 carries, with Daijun Edwards pounding in a TD from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers will look to clean things up before their second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.
