After medic’s rape and murder, Indian doctors stage 24-hour nationwide strike

The Indian Medical Association, India's largest association of modern medicine doctors, appeals Suspension of non-emergency medical services After a female trainee doctor was raped and murdered in a hospital last week, there was 24-hour focus across the country.

Protests broke out across India this week, with hundreds of thousands of medical professionals and activists taking to the streets to call for greater protection of health care workers following an incident in the eastern city of Kolkata, capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.

The IMA claimed the murder and rape cases were handled “crudely” by police and authorities.

Reuters reports The 31-year-old victim was killed inside the medical school where she worked and was found dead on Friday.

The victim reportedly suffered bleeding from his eyes and mouth and injuries to his legs, abdomen, ankle, right hand and fingers. Police said she was raped and a police volunteer was later arrested on suspicion of the crime.

Earlier this week, several government hospitals in the world's most populous country temporarily suspended non-emergency services in protest at the incident.

Thousands of women in West Bengal also marched on Thursday, India's Independence Day, to demand justice for the victims. local media reported.

There are more than India to report 31,500 rape cases in 2022. While it's down slightly from the previous year, it's still higher than from 2010 to 2013, when about 22,000 to 24,000 cases were reported. Data beyond 2022 has not yet been made public.
