Russia fired multiple missiles and drones into northern and eastern Ukraine overnight, injuring at least 29 people, the Ukrainian military and local authorities said on Sunday.

The Ukrainian Air Force said on the Telegram messaging app that the attack targeted the Ukrainian frontline areas of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk.

Russia has been launching attacks across the border with Ukraine, and Kiev said its surprise incursion into Russia's Kursk region earlier this month was aimed at hampering Moscow's ability to launch such attacks.

“Most of the missiles missed their targets,” the air force said, adding that Russia fired one Iskander-M ballistic missile, one Iskander-K cruise missile and six guided air-to-air missiles. It did not specify how many missiles were destroyed.

Local authorities said on Telegram that a missile attack hit the northern area of Sumui, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others, including three children.

Oleh Sinehubov, the governor of the eastern Kharkiv region, posted on Telegram that the Russian attack injured at least 13 people, including a 4-year-old child.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said a natural gas pipeline in the city was damaged, at least two houses were destroyed and 10 were damaged.

Russia launched nine attack drones and Ukrainian air defenses destroyed eight of them over Ukraine's Nikolaev region, the air force said.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Both sides deny that Russia has targeted civilians in its war with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
