Record 59 Percent Turnout Marks Phase I Polls

Date:

SRINAGAR: The first phase of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a voter turnout of 58.85 per cent as of 7:30 PM on September 18, 2024, the highest in 35 years. This notable surge in voter participation was marked by peaceful polling across 24 assembly constituencies (ACs) spanning seven districts, with no major incidents reported, according to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P K Pole.

In the Lok Sabha polls, BJP and Congress have direct contest in Ladakh and Jammu. In the rest of four seats in erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, there are too many local and regional stakeholders.

Kishtwar led the voter turnout with an impressive 77.23 per cent, followed by Doda (69.33 per cent) and Ramban (67.71 per cent). Pulwama recorded the lowest turnout at 46.03 per cent, with Shopian close behind at 53.64 per cent. Overall, the phase saw higher voter engagement than previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, an achievement attributed to the improved security situation, effective campaigning by political parties, and initiatives by the Election Commission.

Polling was conducted at 3,276 polling stations, with voters enthusiastically turning out in large numbers, including significant participation from women, youth, and elderly citizens. Special accommodations were made for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens, enhancing the inclusivity of the election process. One polling station in each AC was managed exclusively by women and PwDs, reflecting the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) commitment to making the electoral process accessible to all.

Besides, 24 special polling stations were established across Jammu, Udhampur, and Delhi to allow Kashmiri migrant voters to participate. The home-voting facility, introduced for the first time, saw elderly and disabled voters casting their ballots from the comfort of their homes.

According to the Election Commission’s press note, the voter turnout exceeded that of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which recorded 58.58 per cent, marking an even greater engagement in this phase of the elections. The Commission noted that voters from all walks of life responded enthusiastically, showcasing long queues at polling stations. The peaceful nature of the election process was supported by a strong security presence, meticulous planning, and the use of webcasting at all polling stations.

The ECI expressed confidence that the remaining phases, scheduled for 25 September and 1 October, would continue this trend of high voter participation. The ECI also highlighted its crackdown on electoral malpractices, with Rs 124 crore in seizures, including Rs 107.9 crore worth of narcotics. Counting of votes is scheduled for 8 October 2024.
