As a redshirt freshman, Manning will replace Quinn Ewers, a Heisman Trophy candidate who led the Longhorns to a 56-7 victory on Saturday. Suffered an abdominal strain in the win over UTSA.
“Archie is going to start at quarterback on Saturday,” Sarkisian said Thursday during his weekly pregame video call, according to 247Sports. “You know, I feel like Quinn has made a lot of progress since Saturday night. Big step up to where he is now. But my decision is – I'm looking forward to (Ewers') future as a player and looking forward to the future of the team, so I think we all know that. Arch is very capable.
Manning, the nephew of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, represented the family name well when he replaced Ewers last Saturday.
He caught nine passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another touchdown while rushing for 67 yards.
The last Texas freshman quarterback to lead the Longhorns to at least five touchdowns in a game was Colt McCoy in 2006.
