Top Eagles Defender Calls His Play ‘Trash’

One of the most important attributes one must have to attain success in any area of life is self-reflection, as well as the willingness to hold one’s self accountable.

The Philadelphia Eagles squandered a golden opportunity to improve to 2-0 on the young season when they blew a late lead and lost to the Atlanta Falcons on “Monday Night Football.”

Jalen Carter, the Eagles’ promising young defensive tackle, missed the first defensive drive of that game for disciplinary reasons, and when he was asked about it, he called his play so far this season “trash” and said he needs to do a better job of reading the opposing team’s offensive line.

“Me, being real to myself, trash. I feel like I could be way better,” Carter said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Last season, Carter posted 6.0 sacks, nine quarterback hits and eight tackles for loss, as well as a fumble recovery he returned for a touchdown, and as a result, he finished second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year balloting behind Houston Texans linebacker Will Anderson.

But Carter hasn’t recorded a single sack, solo tackle, forced fumble or fumble recovery to start this season.

Defense was the bugaboo for Philadelphia last year, especially when it lost five of its last six regular season games and got trounced in the wild-card round of the playoffs by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So far this season, they continue to rank very low in a number of key defensive metrics.

They will visit the red-hot New Orleans Saints in Week 3 before visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4 ahead of their bye in Week 5.
