Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, ending his injury-plagued season and keeping the Rangers out of the playoff picture.

Scherzer, 40, was scheduled to start Saturday night against the visiting Seattle Mariners. Right-hander Dane Dunning (4-7, 5.38 ERA) will start in his place.

This marks the third time Scherzer has been on the injured list this season. After missing six weeks on the IL from July 31 to Sept. 13 with right shoulder fatigue, he made just one start for the Rangers — a no-decision in four innings against Seattle last Saturday. He started the season at Illinois recovering from back surgery and returned to the lineup on June 23.

He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts.

A 17-year veteran, Scherzer has a 216-112 record, a career 3.16 ERA, three Cy Young Awards, eight All-Star selections and two World Series championships.

Among active pitchers, he trails only Justin Verlander in wins, innings (2,878) and strikeouts (3,407).

The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the Mets at the 2023 trade deadline, but he only played 17 games for the Rangers. He went 6-6 with a 3.57 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings.

The Rangers recalled 29-year-old rookie right-hander Gerson Garabito from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. He appeared in 16 games (two starts) for Texas this season, going 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 24 innings, allowing 10 runs and striking out 19.
