Braves top Mets, close gap in NL wild-card race

Michael Harris II had three hits and two RBIs to back up right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach on Tuesday, helping the host Atlanta Braves advance in a three-game series In the first game of the game, they defeated the New York Mets 5-1.

The win puts Atlanta (86-71) within one game of New York (87-70) for the National League's final wild-card spot, which the Mets currently hold. The Braves also have a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks (87-70), who were scheduled to play later Tuesday.

The Warriors led the season series against New York 6-5 and needed a win to seal the tiebreaker. Atlanta owns the tiebreaker against Arizona State.

Harris went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He went 18-for-37 (.486) during that stretch.

Schwerenbach (8-7) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, four batters and four strikeouts. In two starts against the Mets this season, the rookie allowed one run in 14 innings.

Joe Jimenez struck out eight in the scoreless inning for the Braves, and Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect five-pitch game without a save. Nine balls.

New York starter Luis Severino (11-7) lasted just four innings after throwing 89 pitches. He allowed four runs on seven hits while also issuing a walk and striking out five.

The Braves put eight batters on the mound in the third inning and scored three runs. Orlando Arcia hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He scored on a two-run single by Harris, who scored on a single by Ozzie Albies in the opposite field. With two outs, Ramon Laureano knocked out Albies with a soft single to right.

Harris hit his 16th long ball of the season in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

Atlanta's Marcell Ozuna greeted reliever Ryne Stanek with a solo home run to right field in the fifth inning. It was Ozuna's 39th home run of the year.

New York clinched the win in the seventh inning on a solo homer from Mark Vientos, his 26th big flyer of 2024.
