The race for first place in the National League West is heating up as the San Diego Padres clinched at least a wild-card spot with their third straight victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 on Tuesday. Teams don’t earn a spot this way.

The competition for wild cards in the two leagues is also fierce. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins are buckling to the pressure, while the Detroit Tigers are rising to the occasion. The Padres, of course, have been the major league favorite for more than two months.

The Minnesota Lynx look to defeat the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA playoffs. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier, the runner-up for WNBA MVP, had an explosive performance in Game 1.

We'll analyze two MLB games and a WNBA game on Electric Wednesday.

San Diego Padres Los Angeles Dodgers

The Padres have won nine of their past 10 games since the All-Star break and lead the majors with a 41-17 record. Los Angeles is on pace for another NFC West title, but the Padres have entered the game trailing the Dodgers by just two with five games remaining.

When the Dodgers called for a review of the triple play, Ohtani was in the batter's box, but his big hit never came. Unfortunately, his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was not on hand to describe the possibility of a team clinching a playoff spot with three kills.

The first-round bye is extremely important for the Dodgers due to injuries to pitchers. But they're just 3-8 against the Padres, who can tie for the division lead by winning the final two games of the series. Los Angeles has entered winning mode.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will have a big performance for Los Angeles on Wednesday, and the Padres will counterattack with no-hitter Dylan Cease. San Diego enjoyed a long and raucous celebration in the clubhouse, so maybe there was a hangover effect. Or maybe not.

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

The Mets beat the Diamondbacks by a half-game and the Braves by a game to grab the National League's second wild card. Three teams are expected to compete for the final two spots.

With All-Star left-hander Chris Sale on the mound, it certainly felt good for Atlanta to make progress on Wednesday. Sale (18-3, 2.38 ERA) leads the NL in wins, ERA and strikeouts (225) and is likely to win the NL Yang Award unanimously. He has won eight times in a row.

The Warriors won the opener of the three-game series 5-1 and have won five of their past six games. New York loses for second time in eight games but may have star shortstop Francisco Lindor (guard) in Wednesday's lineup.

There's a chance of rain on Wednesday, so weather delays could shorten starting pitchers' playing time. But riding Sale's hot left arm is still the right move.

Phoenix Mercury vs. Minnesota Lynx

Minnesota's win puts the Bobcats into the semifinals and ends the career of Mercury guard Diana Taurasi. The longtime star is the WNBA's all-time leading scorer with 10,646 career points, but at age 42, he no longer has the ability to single-handedly take over games.

After Minnesota defeated Phoenix 102-95 in the opener of a best-of-three series on Sunday, some controversy arose as Collier said she wanted to end Taurasi's career on Wednesday. Calm down, guys. Collier makes a living playing basketball, not riding horses in his neighborhood driveway.

The bigger issue for Mercury isn't Collier's off-the-cuff remarks but how to slow down the WNBA MVP runner-up. She scored 38 points in Game 1, completely exposing Brittney Griner's defense. Phoenix may need to go three-man with Collier this time around.

Taurasi had a great game, scoring 21 points and hitting 5 of 10 three-pointers. But she scored in single digits in four of eight regular-season games in September, so Wednesday's scoring will be down.
