Insider Doesn’t Hold Back His Thoughts About Drake Maye

The New England Patriots have a flawed roster.

Even so, their most glaring need for this season is the quarterback position.

But given how things ended with Mac Jones, and considering how raw Drake Maye was, they didn’t want to make the same mistake with him.

Their offensive line is also one of the worst in the league, and exposing him while putting him in harm’s way didn’t seem to be the wisest idea.

Even so, Jerod Mayo still gave his rookie signal-caller a look in their recent loss to the New York Jets.

Maye was erratic but still showcased his dual-threat skills, and it seems like people within the organization have been impressed by his growth and development.

According to Albert Breer, it should be just a matter of time before we see him again on the field.

Talking on NBC Sports Boston, the Patriots insider claimed that Maye was “the real deal,” adding that the team wants him to start at some point in the season.

Of course, he needs to hit some developmental benchmarks first, but it’s still encouraging to see that this won’t be a redshirt year for the No. 3 pick.

The Patriots need to make sure not to make the same mistakes they made with Mac Jones, and that means putting him in a position to succeed.

But even if their roster is far from ready, there’s nothing like actual game reps to boost a player’s development, so they might as well give him a shot.
