Almost 45 per cent of residence permits issued last year in Portugal were granted to nationals of Brazil.
According to figures from Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), of the total 329,978 residence permits issued in 2023, 150,000 were granted to nationals of Brazil, Schengen.News reports.
The same source notes that last year, the number of immigrants in Portugal stood at 1,044,606. Brazilians accounted for 35.3 per cent of the total or 368,449 citizens. However, people living in the country in an irregular way or those with dual nationality were not included in these statistics.
The figures provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that in the first eight months of 2024, Portugal granted 7,200 work visas to nationals of Brazil.
They noted that the number of Brazilians holding a Portuguese work visa increased by 20 per cent from January to August 2024, compared to the figures registered in the same period last year.

Another way to acquire residency in Portugal is the Golden Visa Program, which attracts a large number of internationals, among them nationals of Brazil as well.

89% Increase in Visa Applications From Brazilians to Portugal
The figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) revealed that an 89 per cent increase was recorded in the number of visa applications from Brazil to Portugal between 2022 and 2023.
While in 2022, the number of visa applications stood at 11,686, last year the number increased to 22,126.
The figures from the Ministry revealed that until last year, the majority of applications were for study and research, exchange and volunteer and teaching purposes, however, now the most famous visa is the work-seeking visa.
This kind of visa saw 8,000 applications, accounting for 36 per cent of the total 22,126 cases. In second place was ranked the visa for family compensation with 13 per cent of the total cases.
