The Washington Commanders are riding high on a 3-1 record, but that doesn’t mean they’re resting on their laurels.
With a few injury concerns looming, the team has been making some strategic roster moves.
They’ve brought guard Marquis Hayes and safety Sheldrick Redwine onto their practice squad, gearing up for a pivotal Week 5 clash against the Cleveland Browns.
And there’s some exciting news on the horizon: Austin Ekeler’s potential return to the field.
The star running back has been making steady progress through the concussion protocol, and things are looking up for Sunday’s game.
Grant Paulsen, who co-hosts the popular Grant and Danny podcast, recently shared some encouraging words from Ekeler himself.
According to Paulsen, Ekeler is feeling optimistic about his chances of suiting up against the Browns.
Austin Ekeler just told us on Grant & Danny that he is tracking toward being able to play on Sunday. Sounds like he expects to be back on the field against the Browns.

The running back told the podcast, “I’m continuing to complete the processes of concussion protocol and working my way through, but I’m feeling like myself, more with it today, so that’s all a good sign to hopefully getting back this week.”
Ekeler didn’t stop there. He added, “Tracking towards being able to play, and that’s a good sign, especially when you’re talking about your head. You want to make sure everything is how it’s supposed to be.”
While Ekeler was sidelined for the Week 4 blowout against the Arizona Cardinals, Jeremy McNichols stepped up.
Filling in as Brian Robinson Jr.’s backup, McNichols made the most of his 38% of offensive snaps.
He put up an impressive stat line: eight carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns, plus a six-yard catch for good measure.
However, with Ekeler’s return on the horizon, it’s likely he’ll reclaim his role as the go-to guy in the Commanders’ backfield passing game.
Ekeler’s versatility and proven track record make him a valuable asset, and the team will surely be eager to get him back into the mix.
